Cisco announced its intent to acquire Sentryo, a Lyon, France-based Industrial IoT cybersecurity company that provides asset visibility and security solutions for industrial control system (ICS) networks.
Sentryo and Cisco previously partnered to incorporate Sentryo’s Edge Sensor into Cisco industrial networking hardware using Cisco’s IOx application framework bringing device-level visibility to the IoT edge and enabling organizations to secure their industrial environments.
Q: Can you explain Sentryo’s offering?
A: Sentryo delivers an IoT technology solution that allows organizations to monitor and protect the sensitive devices operating within their SCADA and industrial control systems (ICS). Sentryo’s ICS CyberVision gives OT professionals complete visibility into their industrial networks to easily identify vulnerabilities, ensure equipment integrity, and collaborate with IT to fight cyber attacks. Gartner named Sentryo a 2018 Cool Vendor in industrial IoT and OT security for its notable approach to protecting converging IT/OT for critical infrastructure ecosystems.
Q: Why did Cisco choose Sentryo?
A: In January 2019, Cisco launched the industry’s first integrated network architecture that extends intent- based networking capabilities to the IoT edge to deliver unmatched scale, flexibility and security for IoT environments. With Sentryo technology, Cisco further enhances the security value proposition to provide sensor optimization at the network edge. This approach offers -control system engineers visibility into their disparate environments to identify vulnerabilities, detect anomalous behavior, and protect their control systems from cyber attacks. Further, the Cisco plus Sentryo architecture eliminates the need for additional hardware and overcomes the drawbacks of traffic mirroring used by other deep-packet, inspection-based visibility solutions which result in excessive on time sensitive control system networks. By using APIs to share device visibility and operational context with the rest of Cisco’s industry leading security portfolio, the Sentryo technology enables OT professionals to collaborate with IT to bring enterprise-grade security to their industrial networks to protect against and fight cyberattacks.
Q: Why is now the right time to acquire Sentryo? A: The Internet of Things delivers potential for increased operational productivity, deep intelligence, and additional revenue creation. Each company has its own IoT requirements and needs infrastructure that will grow and adapt with their b
usiness. Many IoT projects struggle because they cannot scale from pilot to production and are challenged to manage and secure their rapidly growing infrastructure. There are several dynamics at play:
The combination of Cisco network architecture and Sentryo capabilities will help companies capture IoT benefits, easily manage networks and devices at scale, achieve new levels of flexibility, and better protect their assets and data.
