Why is security so important in manufacturing?

Cybersecurity has never been more important—for any type of business—but especially among manufacturers. Despite impressive advances in cybersecurity in recent years, manufacturing and industrial operations remain “islands of vulnerability” waiting to be exploited by bad actors. Legacy industrial control systems—many of which were never built with security in mind—remain especially prone to cyber threats. And as these systems are converged and integrated with enterprise IT technologies, new methods of attack open up.

A recent cybersecurity report from MAPI/Deloitte explains why security is becoming such a big concern for manufacturers:

Alignment of security best practices and objectives is critical as more convergence occurs between the factory floor and enterprise networks. Security is no longer the sole responsibility of IT; it has become a business imperative to maintain operational uptime and protect critical business assets.

The cyberattacks focus on vulnerabilities of the target, and visibility to everything in the plant,
from the shop floor to the top floor, is critical.
