A smart network for a smart campus
About Wipro and it's Expectations
Wipro Limited is a leading global information technology, consulting and business process services company.
It harnesses the power of cognitive computing, hyper-automation, robotics, cloud, analytics and emerging technologies to help its clients adapt to the digital world and make them successful.
Wipro was looking for a smart network that would be secure while ensuring mobility.
It was looking to invest in digital technologies like cloud and analytics to improve user experience. Wipro wanted to protect users and mobilise employees to move around the campus without compromising security and experience. Additionally, it wanted to focus on automation for faster and simpler client onboarding. Agility was another priority, with a desire to make quick network changes for the adoption of public cloud services. Above all, Wipro wanted a solution that could be deployed quickly.
Solutions deployed by Wipro
Wipro wanted to invest in a network that could deliver actionable insights. With an employee base of 170,000, of which close to 50% is extremely mobile, it was important to get insights into security and capture security incidents at the endpoints. Wipro was looking for a network that was intelligent enough to bring it all together; analytics of unusual behaviour, malware and the like, making it much easier to mitigate security incidents.
Cisco’s network intuitive delivered the security and mobility that Wipro was looking for. The SD-Access Fabric provides a revolutionary approach to ensure one consistent policy across the entirety of Wipro’s network at an unprecedented scale—no matter if it’s wired and wireless.
Other solutions deployed: Cisco DNA Center, ISE and Catalyst 9K
Cisco DNA: Realize the benefits of intent-based networking and an open and extensible management platform
Cisco ISE: Designed for the new era of networking, with ASIC and software innovations to deliver an intent-based network
Catalyst 9000 Switches: Designed for the new era of networking, with ASIC and software innovations to deliver an intent-based network
With these solutions combined, Wipro met its objective of establishing a smart network that would be secure, while ensuring mobility. It also fulfilled its priority of a quick configuration and set-up process.
According to Raja Ukil, the Senior Vice President and Chief Information Officer, Wipro was looking for a smart network which could enable workforce mobility for 170,000 employees while ensuring data security.
Wipro achieved increased workforce mobility and improved user experience. The policy follows users and devices as they seamlessly move between locations and projects, as people were no longer stationed at their desk. Processes were expedited, with the time taken to onboard clients reduced from months to days. Additionally, the time to deploy cloud services was reduced from hours to minutes.
With greater speed across its processes and systems, Wipro could furnish new projects with required resources at a shorter time. The time expended was shortened to mere minutes, from an initial duration of one week.
The network segmentation introduced by the Cisco solutions enabled easy maintenance of client security and data privacy.
There was greater simplicity implemented across cloud applications, such as the Office 365 suite which was updated for higher user productivity.
Overall, the simplified network and hyper-automation of IT resulted in a significant drop in costs.
The Way Forward
Wipro is looking to scale the implementation of this comprehensive solution and scale it across all its other facilities. It is also considering other Cisco products such as Catalyst 9000 – the next generation of switches optimized for IoT; and running trials of Encrypted Traffic Analytics and Network Data Platform.

And Wipro says...
“When it came to DNA, we wanted all of this and found that it is working fine. We wanted to do a pilot with one campus. Now we are convinced and happy with the results, and want to scale it up” – Raja Ukil, Senior Vice President and Chief Information Officer, Wipro Limited.
