Superloop & Cisco Edge Computing - Case Study
Superloop & Cisco Edge Computing
Superloop challenges incumbent Service Providers (SPs) by providing managed services and connectivity across Asia Pacific.
Founded in 2014 by serial entrepreneur, Bevan Slattery, Superloop envisions itself as the most trusted enabler of connectivity and managed services in Asia Pacific.
Looking to become the leading provider of connectivity, Superloop now has more than 650 km of fibre network across Australia, Singapore and Hong Kong. It has entered the retail internet service provider (ISP) space and become a managed services and cloud provider through multiple acquisitions including BigAir, NuSkope and GX2holdings in 2017.
Superloop is also a part of the INDIGO consortium which is a partnership to build subsea cable systems connecting Singapore, Jakarta, Perth and Sydney.
According to Superloop Principal Engineer, Cameron Ferdinands, Superloop needed a strong and stable infrastructure that could adapt to future needs and current demands, while continuing to stand and expand at the leading edge of technology.
Shifting from Cloud to Edge Computing
Today, interaction between users and online content is becoming increasingly complicated, with growing demands for streaming of longer and more video content across multiple devices. Coupled with the increasing need for speed and better user experiences, existing cloud-based computing architectures are unable to cope with the explosive growth in data volume.
As such, edge computing is becoming an increasingly viable solution for enterprises as it distributes computing power to the edge. This shift has allowed OTT providers to transform, improve content delivery and reach new markets.
“What we needed to do is build a network that is part of the edge and is able to take advantage of the OTT provider opportunity from a content delivery and an experience perspective,” commented Ferdinands.
Solutions deployed by Superloop
To support its market expansion and edge computing activities, Superloop needed a high-value solution that provides edge computing capabilities.
Through a thorough commercial and technical engagement process, Superloop chose Cisco as a trusted partner to deliver an integrated network and data center solution in 2018 due to the following reasons:
- Cisco’s willingness to disrupt existing model and bring network to the edge
- Cisco’s capabilities of pushing more functions to the VNS
- Cisco offering appropriate solutions to achieve networking objectives
- Flexible and innovative payments of solutions with
“We had zero relationship with Cisco 24 months ago. Taking somewhat of a first step of faith, we decided to engage with Cisco. And over the past 18 months, we have seen the vendor relationship grow into something that I can only hope to emulate with my customers. The commitment and engagement with Cisco has been top notch.”

Superloop on the results
Ferdinands highlighted two main advantages Cisco and the solutions brought, “It’s two-fold. There’s definitely an economic advantage working with Cisco and the second one, which is the biggest advantage, is that Cisco was willing to help us and even modify their solutions to achieve our objectives.”
“What we were looking for was an integrated solution under a single network, and Cisco was able to deliver that for us,” commented Ferdinands.
“What we got was an industry-leading solution, at the leading edge of technology that was available. Coupled together and delivered over a period of time, we were able to drive really great output,” he added.
The integrated solution built a strong foundation and allowed Superloop to continue its expansion plans across Asia Pacific. It tightened the connection between every aspect of the network, increasing business value and IT delivery. This thereby allowed for ease of implementation and innovation across the network.
