BT and Cisco Meraki
BT: Delivering leading telecommunication services worldwide
Regarded as one of the world’s leading telecommunications companies, BT serves the needs of customers in the United Kingdom and more than 180 countries. Their managed network IT services division, Global Services, focuses on delivering security, cloud and networking services to multinational organizations through a team of over 17,000 employees.
BT has been present with direct sales operations in Asia Pacific since the 1980s, with Hong Kong as the regional headquarters. Currently, there are more than 2,400 employees in the region supporting its customers.
With offices across Asia Pacific, Middle East & Africa, managing their infrastructure was often a complex process with no remote central management and multiple teams involved. This made troubleshooting and support complicated.
Furthermore, smaller sites faced a greater challenge to manage the network infrastructure due to limited resources and multiple layers of Wi-Fi infrastructure.
Challenges with decentralized infrastructure management
With 18 sites across the Asia Pacific, Middle East & Africa (AMEA) region and multiple teams involved in support, managing the Wi-Fi infrastructure posed serious challenges such as:
Standardization: Difficulty in keeping a standardized procedure for setups and security policies across each site and tracking visitors on the site locally.
Resource management: Smaller sites with limited resources had to keep up with managing the different layers of Wi-Fi infrastructure as part of their day-to-day operations.
Long approval process: Infrastructure change management was a lengthy process with multiple teams involved.
To plan ahead and resolve challenges in a decentralized infrastructure management environment, BT hoped to:
Solutions deployed by BT
As a Cisco partner, BT discovered the Cisco Meraki solution. After extensive research and testing, they decided to invest in Cisco Meraki due to its versatility and ability to adapt to new challenges and deliver new innovation to customers.
After onboarding the Meraki solution across all sites, BT leveraged the built-in configuration tools of the Meraki dashboard to design and launch a full range of Wi-Fi offerings across all sites, as well as the MX Security Appliance for protecting users from malicious content.
After utilizing the Meraki solution for over a year, they are now looking at deploying Meraki CCTV devices in the near future, which will provide physical security across all sites.
“After doing our research on the different products, we tested the Cisco Meraki devices and, from our results, we’re happy with its capabilities, simplicity, and security features, all powered by the intuitive Meraki dashboard.”

BT on the results
Following the onboarding of the Cisco Meraki solution with its centralized dashboard management, the entire Wi-Fi environment is managed by local IT instead of multiple teams, freeing up resources to focus on other important tasks. The solution also enabled them to reduce complexity and resources required to support the infrastructure.
BT also implemented consistent security policies across all of the distributed locations, simplified setups across all sites, and improved bandwidth leveraging the built-in traffic shaping tools, as well as better control, visibility, and management of licenses, which were bundled into the dashboard. The Meraki licensing structure has also saved on time and cost across all sites.
“We saw a positive organizational impact with reduced complexity and reduced resources required to support the infrastructure. With the centralized dashboard management, the team now has more time to focus on other important tasks. Overall, the Meraki solution has greatly simplified, standardized, and improved our Wi-Fi environment.”

BT’s simplified network infrastructure
With a simplified network infrastructure in place, BT is in a better position to remotely manage their current sites and facilitate new site expansion with template features. They can also focus on other organizational initiatives, from scaling operations to providing a personalized customer experience to their customers.
“We are now looking at the CCTV feature which provides physical security, all managed from the same Meraki platform,” said Steve Dzeparoski, Head of IT Australasia BT.
A simplified and unified network management platform allows organizations to prepare for upcoming networking trends including next-generation network analytics, network automation, distributed computing and more.
“Meraki helps us adapt to new IT challenges as they arise and allows us to offer the latest innovations to our customers. We love the unified platform, as well as the centralized licensing. It makes everything much easier to manage.” said Dzeparoski.
